Caught
There was a chuckle embedded in her speech, a kind of gulp that seemed to block connection with others in the conversation. Listeners empathized and felt it in their throats instead of hearing what she said. A faint darkness cloaked her voice, so nothing pure came through. To speak with her spawned loneliness. She told stories that seemed about to be retracted. Friends wanted to stay with her, but found themselves backing away.
